So my truck has been searching for an idle on and off as of late. I was talking with Nibbles last time we got together and he recommended that I clean out the Idle Control Valve. So thats what I did today
It was disgusting, this is what came out of it:
The gasket was toast as well, I dont think the ICV has ever come off:
I stripped the threads on the bottom hole putting it back on, so I put some blue thread lock on there. It seems to be holding.
I also found out why my truck has a weird idle with the AC on. The AC clutch doesnt like to stay on 100% of the time. I think thats normal and I’m not gonna worry about it anymore.
I also had a coolant leak coming from where the radiator relief hose connects to the overflow tank. That wont hurt the system but it was kind of annoying. Nibbles and I also talked about that last time we got together. He recommended I get some rubber washers and put one on there. I ended up putting 2 on there:
A friend also got me some fuzzy dice as a very early birthday present:
My truck Idles so much better now and I dont smell gas at Idle anymore. But I have one more issue; My heat shield rattles incessantly at 1800-2100 RPM. That is my normal cruising RPM. How horrible of an Idea would it be to remove it, because Im about to shoot it with a shotgun . Its annoying me SO MUCH.

It’s always good when you can just clean something and you don’t have to replace it.

Yuhhhh

It really is. Whats your stance on removing the heat shield though?

Personally, I say, mend it somehow and leave it. Many people would just rip it off and be done with it. Short term, it may not harm anything. Long term, the heat could cause something to fail prematurely, bushings could get hot, dry out, crack, grease in bearings could get hot and lose lubricity. It depends on what it is protecting.

Its just covering the catalytic converter so that I dont set tall grass on fire. I dont drive in tall grass though

My dad’ ranger had it’;s heat shield fall off and he parked on a grass driveway. We just made sure we mowed the grass, and never suffered any fires.

just bust out your welder and do some welds on the heat shield. always works for me.

Where’s the heat shield located? I can tell you with a lot of experience that it’s probably a case of rusted out washers or loose bolts. Tighten those or replace the washers and it all goes away.

Oh, that one, meh, rip it off, just don’t let it sit idling in a grassy field.
Interesting fact: older (80’s) Forest Service trucks came without catalytic converters for this exact reason, risk of setting things on fire.

Its in between the frame and the drive shaft, its also held together with clips not bolts.

Ford Ranger? The ICV gasket looks like the one from my old Ranger.

Your AC regulates pressure by cycling the compressor clutch. Totally normal.
And I’m fairly certain the fuzzy dice fixed the idle.

I would repair it for the reasons Autofixation mentioned. It’s not just a “setting the grass on fire” issues; it helps protect the rest of your vehicle.
This is not nearly as big a fix as the one you just did though! You just need to add some mechanical dampening. Is it possible the clips you mentioned have lost some of their springiness?
Also: nice job on mending some things!

tighten the heat shield bolts?
if you can get to them of course.

Its held on with clips, and I cant get to the one thats rattling.

break the clip and fit some bolts.

Eventually I’ll do that, but in the mean time I think I’ll just yank it and put it back on later.

only downside to that is , it’s a heat shield , what or where is the shield protecting?
![]() 04/19/2015 at 07:23 |

Its just over the cat, Its no big deal to remove it as long as I dont drive over tall grass

At the VERY least you can go to Home Depot, get some hobby wire (near the picture hanging stuff) and wire it down tight. Use pliers to cinch it down.
